What about a free Whataburger? I know, sounds too good to be true, but it’s not! Tomorrow, August 3rd, they will be giving away free burger in honor of their 60th Birthday!
Just head into one of the Whataburger’s near Curry Junction between 5:00 and 8:00pm. Show up in something orange (Whataburger’s tell-tale color) and you’ll get a free burger!
So, if you’ve been craving something greasy then head on over for some free food on Tuesday! Celebrate 60 years of great food and show your orange pride.
Are you a fan of this slant-roofed burger joint? Which Whataburger in Abilene do you usually go to?
Driving in the Rain, I’m Just Driving in the Rain

We have been getting quite a bit of rain the last few days, with more one the way. I always remember I need to get new windshield wipers or I need to clean my windshield when the rain arrives.
In light of the rain that’s been drenching Abilene here are a few ways to keep your vehicle rain ready:
Check your wiper blades regularly. Heat and sun, something we get lots of in Texas in the summers, can cause them at age faster. Look for cracking, stiff or brittle rubber, and lack of flexibility. Change the blades if you notice these signs of age and wear. The NHTB suggest you change your wiper blades every year.
Consider using Rain-X or a similar product to help improve visibility in the rain. It’s particularly useful during heavy downpours!
Keep the interior windshield clean to reduce fogging when it rains. There are actually anti-fog products which work pretty well.
I personally am a big fan of rain-x. My dad always use to apply it to my windshield for me when I was younger and I use it about twice a year these days. Do you have any tips for keeping you and your car ready for the rain?

Summer Reading Club

Growing up I remember many a trip to the library in the summer. My mom always had us signed up for the local summer reading program as soon as school was out. I think something as simple as that summer reading program we were always a part of did a lot to foster my love of reading as an adult. To this day I still feel the pull of my bookshelf a bit more in the summer.
The Abilene Public Library has a summer reading program going on for kids from ages 0 to 18. There are prizes for reading and weekly story times at the library. This is a wonderful and inexpensive summer activity for you and your kids. Library cards are free to any resident of Taylor County. There is no limit on the number of books you can check out and your child can even get their own library card!
Summer reading clubs are wonderful ways to help your kids adopt a lifelong love of reading. The programs encourage them to read and going to the library gives them a wide selection of reading materials to choose from.

Amazing Summer Fruits: Blueberries
I adore blueberries; they may be my very favorite summer fruits. They are the sweet and colorful jewels of summer. They make spectacular muffins and pies. Best of all, they have a wide selection of vitamins and minerals:
- Magnesium
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin K
- Fiber
They also have some notable health benefits. Blueberries have been found to contain anthocyanins and flavonols. Studies have shown that these nutrients can help prevent and fight off a variety of diseases.
All these are wonderful reasons to hit the farmers market and enjoy some Texas fruites. Add these amazing berries to your diet. Try out of of the great blueberry recipes to add them to your diet today:
- Blueberry cake – it’s not bad for you its chock full of berries!
- Blueberry pancakes – get your day stated off on the right foot with a tall stack of Blueberry pancakes.
- Blueberry muffins – what better way to start your day then with a muffin full of vitamins and anti-oxidants.

Green Summer Fun for the Family

Summer is equally too short and too long. When you’re on vacation and enjoying yourself it just fly’s by. However, when the kids are whiney and board it seems to crawl. Having a few activities planned can really help prevent any boredom. If you can fold some green activities into your kids schedule, even better!
Here are a few great and green things you can do with your kids this summer:
- Visit a local farmers market with your kids. Not only will this allow you to get some wonderful seasonal produce, but it will help your children better understand where their food comes from.
- Get outside and take a walk or go for a swim in the Curry Junction pool!
- Declutter the kids rooms. Go through old toys and clothes with your kids and donate the ones they’ve outgrown. Not only will this help you get your home more organized, but it will help teach your kids the value of giving to individuals less fortunate then them.
- Clean up that patio and use it for evening meals or family nights. This will reduce your energy consumption and get the family together.
- As the first day of school gets closer gather all the school supplies from last year so you can see what needs to be replaced, replenished and what can be re-used.
Woman’s Day has a great article with more eco friendly summer activities. How many activities do you usually plan for your kids in the summer?
All American 4th of July

The holiday weekend is upon us and I don’t know about you, but I am seriously looking forward to celebrating! The Fourth of July is one of my very favorite holidays. Probably in part because I really love to eat, and cook outs are an integral part of this holiday. Plus, it is a holiday which tends to involve time with friend and family, which is also fun.
Here are a few things you need to have a truly “All American” Fourth of July party:
- Corn on the cob – I would suggest grilled corn as it is my personal favorite. It just gives a little something special.
- Barbecued Ribs may be the quintessential summer meat. They are messy, take forever to cook, but are entirely worth it!
- Make your own watermelon pops for cooling off with! A great way to enjoy watermelon!
- The stars and stripes need to be somewhere; I’m a big fan of a table runner to incorporate them!
- Deck out your door so everyone can find your apartment easily!
- Grab some red and white flowers at the grocery store and dress them up by arranging them in a festive blue vase!
Will you be hosting an Independence Day bash this summer?

My summer memories are punctuated with sparkly, loud firework displays. In fact, fireworks may be one of my favorite summer events. I look forward to 4th of July fireworks for month in advance. I can promise you I’ll be at Rister Park to enjoy the fireworks on Saturday.
Here are the Independence Day celebrations taking place around Abilene:
4th Annual All American Fireworks Show will be at Rister Park starting at 5:00 pm. The free event boasts food and games for your entertainment. The fireworks will begin at dusk.
Hillcrest Neighborhood July 4th Parade is Saturday, July 3rd, starting at 10:00 am at 2490 Campus Court. Everyone is invited to participate in this foot parade. Enjoy homemade cookies and ice cream afterwards.
Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration on Saturday, July 3rd, will be at the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. There will be a parade, a reading of the Declaration of Independence and free admission all day.
These are all great celebrations for Saturday, so what will you be going to celebrate on Sunday?
